Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disorder affecting skin and joints. It is characterised by redness and inflammation of the skin, followed by the formation of scaly patches called psoriatic plaques. Skin conditions are explained in Ayurveda under Kushta Roga. Mainly there are two types of Kushta, and they are Mahakushta and Kshudra Kushta.
What Causes Psoriasis?
According to Ayurveda, Psoriasis is a condition caused because of vitiation of all the three doshas such as Vata, Pitta and Kapha. However, predominantly Vata and Kapha are aggravated. When Vata dosha is vitiated predominantly, then we can see the symptoms such as pain, dryness of skin and formation of scaly plaques on the body. Pitta vitiation is characterised by burning sensation and inflammation of the skin. Finally, if Kapha is vitiated, the person will have symptoms such as itching, discharge and thickening of the skin.
What are the Triggering factors for Psoriasis?
- Intake of Virudhahara. I.e. In taking of incompatible food like dairy with fish.
- Excessive intake of black gram, yoghurt, seafood. Sour and salty food.
- Consumption of Alcohol and tobacco.
- Suppression of natural Urges, such as vomiting, holding urine or stool, may trigger this condition.
- Excess and regular intake of food irrespective of your hunger
- Stress and skin injuries can trigger this skin condition.
Clinical Features
- Reddish discolouration of skin associated with inflammation
- Scaling of skin which is in silver colour
- Itchy and painful skin
- Bleeding from scratched skin
- Scaly plaques on the scalp
- Blackening of the affected part.
